Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
12.13.18
For those suffering from back and neck pain, sciatica*, bulging or herniated disks, and degenerative disk disease; solace may be found in non-surgical spinal decompression.
At Knecht Chiropractic in Lakeview, Chicago nonsurgical-spinal decompression therapy is used to stretch and relax the spine in a controlled manner. The theory being, that a negative pressure (pressure within the disc itself) is introduced to the spine, which is thought to have two potential benefits: Herniated, or bulging disc, material is pulled back into the disc, while healing nutrients are given clear passage into the disc fostering a better healing environment. In fact a study by Sydney Univ., Australia found “A statistically significant reduction in pain and improvement in functional outcome was obtained in patients with chronic low back pain” treated with nonsurgical-spinal decompression.
The process of spinal decompression is non-invasive and patients remain clothed during the procedure. To begin, patients will lie on a motorized table, the lower half of which can move. A harness is placed around the hips and is attached to the lower table near the feet. The upper part of the table remains in a fixed position as the lower half proceeds to slide back and forth, providing traction followed by relaxation. The patient will feel a stretch in the spine taking pressure off the spinal disks, which are gel-like support cushions between the bones in your spine and in so doing restoring disk height . A peer reviewed study performed by BioMed Central Ltd. Found that “Non-surgical spinal decompression was associated with a reduction in pain and an increase in disc height. The correlation of these variables suggests that pain reduction may be mediated, at least in part, through a restoration of disc height.”
As a result patients may see their bulging or herniated disks retracting, pressure taken off nerves and other structures in your spine and the promotion of movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks so they can heal faster. In a study conducted by the Univ. of Illinois 71% of 778 cases found pain relief with “improvements in mobility and activities of daily living [correlating] strongly with pain reduction.” For more information check out Knecht Chiropractic’s website to take advantage of special offers and more at: knechtchiropractic.com.

1 The TENS treatment demonstrated a success rate of 0%, while VAX-D demonstrated a success rate of 68.4% (p < 0.001). A statistically significant reduction in pain and improvement in functional outcome was obtained in patients with chronic low back pain treated with VAX-D. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11680522
2 The treatment was successful in 71% of the 778 cases, when success was defined as a reduction in pain to 0 or 1, on a 0 to 5 scale. Improvements in mobility and activities of daily living correlated strongly with pain reduction. The causes of back pain and their relationship to this therapy are also discussed. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9583577
3 Non-surgical spinal decompression was associated with a reduction in pain and an increase in disc height. The correlation of these variables suggests that pain reduction may be mediated, at least in part, through a restoration of disc height. A randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm these promising results. https://bmcmusculoskeletdisord.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2474-11-155
